What the Estimate Is Based On

Real North West solar yields

We assume around 900 kWh generated per year for every kW of panels — a realistic figure for Lancashire and the wider North West, with cloud and seasonal variation already factored in. A 4 kW system works out at roughly 3,600 kWh a year.

Your home's usage pattern

Solar saves you most when you use power as it's generated. We model a typical household demand curve — lower overnight, higher in the morning and evening — so the split between electricity used at home and exported reflects real life.

Battery shifts solar to the evening

Adding a battery stores surplus daytime generation instead of exporting it, then powers your home through the expensive evening peak — pushing the share of solar you actually use up sharply. Many customers also charge the battery on cheap overnight rates for extra savings.

Tariff rates you control

Defaults use a typical import rate of 24p/kWh and a 15p/kWh Smart Export Guarantee rate, but you can change both under "Advanced" to match your own tariff. MCS-certified installs mean domestic solar is zero-rated for VAT.

This calculator gives a guide estimate for illustration only and is not a quotation. Actual savings depend on your roof, shading, orientation, usage habits, tariff and the equipment specified. We don't show an install price or payback here because every property is different — book a free survey for figures tailored to your home.
